Sophia Collins celebrated her 102nd birthday on Dec. 28 at the Murphy Lake Apartments in Warrensburg.
Sophia was born Dec. 30, 1921, in Arkansas City, Kansas, where she spent her childhood. The family moved Sophia to the Warrensburg area in her later years, so she would be nearer to them.
She has three children.
Sophia plays the piano and has for many years. She loved playing at church during worship growing up, and still plays her worship songs today on a piano at the apartments, where tenants and staff enjoy hearing her play. She was also ordained as a minister in her earlier years. Sophia also enjoys being involved at Murphy Lake and attending get-togethers, such as the recent annual Christmas party.
One memory she recalls often was during World War II when she would shuttle the soldiers to and from different destinations. She loved driving the “big truck” as well as being helpful and able to support American soldiers and the country.
