Over 60 million Americans have been affected by the winter storm across the Midwest and Eastern part of the country.

In Missouri, the National Weather Service reported over a foot of snowfall in Kansas City and the surrounding area on Monday, Jan. 6.

Locally, Warrensburg has seen six inches of snow hit its streets. Other Johnson County cities like Kingsville and Knob Noster have seen similar levels of snowfall.

Most area schools were slated to return to class on Tuesday, Jan. 7, but have called off classes. Cancelations include Warrensburg R-VI, Knob Noster, Holden R-3, Crest Ridge, Chilhowee and Leeton R-X.

The University of Central Missouri campus is expected to reopen as of 9 p.m. Monday.

Whiteman Air Force Base will be under delayed reporting. Facility managers are to report at 0700 to check facilities and report any issues. All other personnel are required to report no earlier than 0900 at a staggered approach. Contact your supervisor or chain for additional details or questions.

Residents should take caution on the roads and bundle up before heading outdoors.

The NWS forecasted a high of 31 degrees Fahrenheit for the week on Friday, while low temperatures are expected to reach around one degree. Bitterly cold temperatures and wind chills of minus 10 to minus 15 will remain in the area through Wednesday morning.

The Missouri Department of Transportation urged drivers to avoid travel on Monday as crews worked to clear the heavy snowfall.

“The northern half of Missouri, especially from Interstate 70 to the north, received 8 inches to over a foot of snow, with some pockets of northwestern Missouri receiving nearly two feet,” MoDot said via the release. “Today, motorists can expect heavy snow on entrance and exit ramps, outer roads, and the non-interstates. If motorists are driving and get stuck, please stay in the vehicle to avoid the potential of another vehicle sliding into you.”

MoDOT Director Ed Hassinger said via the release, “Our team will continue to work around the clock, and we are shifting staff from the southern parts of the state to the north to help continue to dig out from this major storm.”

Missouri road conditions are available 24/7 on the Traveler Information Map at www.modot.org on desktop and mobile devices.
