WFD reports July 24 structure fire

Posted

WARRENSBURG – The Warrensburg Fire Department and the Johnson County Fire Protection District responded to a report of a structure fire in the 300 block of West Market Street on Sunday, July 24.

Crews responded at 3:02 a.m. to the report of a heavily involved structure fire. WFD received automatic mutual aid assistance from the Johnson County Fire Protection District.

“It occurred in the middle of the night, so when the crews arrived on scene, they had pretty heavy fire involvement in the back portion of the house,” WFD Fire Chief Ken Jennings told the Star-Journal on Monday. “They were able to make an aggressive interior fire attack to get that fire out.”

No injuries were reported.

WFD reports there were six dogs in the residence when the fire occurred. All six dogs managed to escape before crews arrived on scene.

“Warrensburg Police Department ended up corralling most of them early on into it,” said Jennings. “So that they were kept safe there on the scene. By the of the fire we had located all six.”

The residents were not in the structure at the time of the fire.

“It was a pretty labor-intensive fire,” said Jennings. “There was extension to the attic, so we had quite a bit of overhaul that occurred after the initial fire was controlled. We had quite a bit of overhaul. Obviously, it was cooler by that evening, but it was still pretty warm out for firefighters. So just a lot of work, a lot of keeping folks hydrated in between, taking frequent breaks. It did drag things out on scene, being able to get stuff done just because we had to take a little more frequent breaks like we do on those types of fires.”

WFD was assisted by the Warrensburg Police Department, the Johnson County Ambulance District, Evergy, and Spire.

WFD reports the fire was brought under control at 3:17 a.m. The last unit was cleared at 7:32 a.m.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
