CENTERVIEW — A Centerview resident has been accused of shooting and killing his grandfather, claiming that he had been poisoning him, on Sunday, Aug. 1.

Mastin Raines, 19, has been charged with two class A felony charges of second-degree murder, an unclassified felony charge of armed criminal action and a class A felony charge of unlawful use of a weapon-shooting at/from a motor vehicle at a person, motor vehicle or building resulting in death or injury.

Raines was arraigned on the charges in Johnson County Court on Monday, Aug. 2. He entered a plea of not guilty.

According to the court’s probable cause statement, on Aug. 1, law enforcement responded to a report of shots being fired in the 300 block of Southwest Highway 58, Centerview.

Upon arrival, the responding officer claims they located Raines, who said, “He will never do it again.” The officer stated they asked Raines who he was referring to and responded with, “My grandfather, he’ll never do that again.”

A detective stated that upon their arrival, they located the victim, William Gustin, lying on the living room floor with multiple apparent gunshot wounds to his stomach, right shoulder and neck.

The detective stated they believe the victim was shot at close range with the bullet exiting the victim and entering the floor based upon two apparent holes located in the flooring beside the victim’s head.

The detective stated they later spoke with a witness who was in the kitchen of the residence and heard gunshots.

The witness claimed they hid in the bathroom and later saw Raines holding a firearm. The witness said they asked Raines to give them the firearm and he did so while saying he had shot Gustin.

The detective states they later spoke with Raines after Miranda Rights were read to him.

The detective states Raines alleged that Gustin was “poisoning” him and told the detective, “Today is the day,” referring to killing Gustin.

Raines told the detective he loaded his 30.06 semi-automatic rifle and began consuming alcohol to work up the courage to kill the victim.

The detective states Raines admitted to killing Gustin by shooting the victim twice, once through the stomach and once through the spine.

Court documents state the range of punishment for a class A felony is a prison term of not less than 10 years and not to exceed 30 years or life imprisonment.
