The Star-Journal newsroom took home three awards in the Missouri Press Association Better Newspaper Contest for work published in 2022.

The awards were presented at the 2023 Missouri Press Association convention in St. Louis on Saturday, Sept. 23. The Star-Journal competed against other weekly newspapers of similar circulation size in Class 2.

“After working hard year-round to offer quality local news and sports coverage for our readers, it’s always a fun bonus to bring home some awards recognizing those efforts,” Editor Nicole Cooke said. “Sports Editor Joe Andrews and news reporter Meliyah Venerable do a great job keeping the Star-Journal’s print editions and website full of local news articles, and I’m proud to see them being recognized on a statewide level.”

Andrews received third place in Best Sports News Story or Package for “Warrensburg Activities Complex baseball facility debuts.” The judge said the article was “well written” and “very informative.”

The Star-Journal staff received second place for Best Online Newspaper or Website.

The Star-Journal staff also received third place for Best Local Business Coverage, competing against weekly newspapers in Classes 1 and 2.

“Great local stories on local businesses,” the judge wrote. “Keep up the good work!”
