Memorial Day activities planned throughout Pettis & Johnson counties

Several events and activities are planned throughout Pettis and Johnson counties over Memorial Day Weekend.

Johnson County

The American Legion Post 131 and VFW Post 2513 will host several activities over Memorial Day weekend.

At 9 a.m. Friday, Whiteman Air Force Base airmen and family members and TRIAD AFJROTC cadets will place flags on veterans’ graves in Sunset Hill Cemetery. Members of the two posts will also place flags in six other cemeteries in the Warrensburg area.

On Memorial Day, short ceremonies at Memorial Gardens Cemetery and Sunset Hill Cemetery will be hosted at 9:10 a.m. and 9:30 a.m., respectively. At 10 a.m., there will be a ceremony at the Johnson County Courthouse.

In the event of inclement weather, the two cemetery events may be canceled and the 10 a.m. ceremony would be moved to Matthews-Crawford Post 131, 733 E. Young St.

Chief MSgt. Jessica Cable of the 442d Security Police Squadron at Whiteman AFB will be the guest speaker at the 10 a.m. ceremony. Originally from Tunkhannock, Pennsylvania, Cable entered the U.S. Air Force in March 2006 in the Security Forces career field. She then transitioned into the U.S. Air Force Reserves in June 2014.

Cable currently serves as the Senior Enlisted Leader for her squadron. She deployed to Kuwait in 2017 in support of Operation Inherent Resolve and in 2023, she participated in exercises for Defender Europe in Greece and Jaded Thunder at Volk Field in Wisconsin.

She earned bachelor’s degrees from the American Military University in Sports and Health Sciences and Criminal Justice. She earned an associate degree in Instructor of Technology and Military Science from the Community College of the Air Force. She and her husband, Matt, have a daughter, Teagan, and son, Blake.

Cadets from Triad AFJROTC will pick up the flags at the Sunset Hill Cemetery on Tuesday, May 28.

Pettis County

At 7 a.m. Saturday, May 25, volunteers will place flags on veterans’ graves at various cemeteries. Voiture 333 40 & 8 and Troop 54 Scouts will be at Highland Sacred Gardens, American Legion Post 620, Troop 61 Scouts and JROTC will be at Memorial Park Cemetery, and VFW Post 2591, Troop 66 Scouts and JROTC will be at Crown Hill Cemetery. All flag volunteers are invited to breakfast at the VFW Post 2591, 29451 U.S. Highway 50 in Sedalia.

American Legion Post 520 will host a Memorial Day ceremony at 2 p.m. Sunday, May 26 in the La Monte Cemetery.

On Monday, May 27, a Memorial Day ceremony will be hosted at 10 a.m. at Crown Hill Cemetery. Following the ceremony, 40 & 8 will host a picnic from 11:30 a.m.t o 2 p.m. at shelter house 2 at Liberty Park.

Monday evening, volunteers will retrieve flags from the cemeteries beginning at 5 p.m.
