The Warrensburg Police Department used less-than-lethal force against a man armed with a knife in the 100 block of West Pine Street on Friday, Oct. 17.
Damion T. Williams was hit by a bean bag round in both thighs before being tased after officers were called to the area at approximately 7:45 p.m. on reports of a man brandishing a knife “running around” in the street.
A social media post from WPD states a reporting party said the man had stolen his wallet and was “raging.”
Officers attempted to de-escalate the situation upon arrival. Williams allegedly repeatedly told officers to shoot him.
Due to a community presence at downtown businesses and restaurants, the use of force was deemed necessary. The bean bag rounds were not successful, leading to the use of the taser.
Officers took Williams into custody after he was tased. He was found to be in possession of a lethal cutting instrument.
Williams was transported to Western Missouri Medical Center with bruising from the bean bag rounds and two small puncture wounds from being tased.
He was released to hospital staff for unrelated medical concerns.
WPD is seeking charges through the Johnson County Prosecutor’s Office.
