Warming shelters to open during freezing temperatures

JOHNSON COUNTY — With dangerously cold temperatures already in Johnson County and expected to continue through Christmas weekend, several area warming shelters will be open, with some operating 24/7.

The City of Leeton announced that City Hall, 108 W. Summerfield Ave. in Leeton, will be open as a warming center on Thursday, Dec. 22 and Friday, Dec. 23. For more information, call Leeton City Hall at 660-653-4622.

The City of Holden announced that City Hall, 101 W. Third St. in Holden, will be open as a warming station from Thursday, Dec. 22 to Sunday, Dec. 25. For more information, call Holden City Hall at 816-732-4811.

Refuge on Ming, 207 Ming St. in Warrensburg, will open as a warming shelter Thursday morning, Dec. 22 through Sunday, Dec. 25. For more information, call 660-624-1062.

The Knob Noster Police Department announced that Knob Noster City Hall will be a warming shelter for this week’s storm during normal business hours, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday. In case of an emergency or major power outage, City Hall will be open to the public with accessible bathrooms. KNPD reminded anyone coming to City Hall for shelter to bring food, warm clothing, blankets, and phone chargers. Pets will only be allowed in a secure kennel. Water will be available. The Sedalia Warming Shelter will be open in the basement of St. Vincent de Paul St. Patrick Chapel, 415 E. Fourth St. in Sedalia. It will be available starting at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 21, and remain open until the weather is no longer life-threatening on Tuesday, Dec. 27. Meals and bedding will be provided.
