Star-Journal newsroom welcomes new reporter

Posted

The Star-Journal has added a new reporter to its newsroom staff.

Meliyah Venerable joined the Star-Journal staff as its new reporter this week. Venerable will bring the Star-Journal newsroom back up to full staff with two news reporters and a sports editor; the second reporting position has been vacant since Dustin Steinhoff left the newspaper last fall for a new job. She joins reporter Sara Lawson and sports editor Joe Andrews.

“I’m looking forward to working with Meliyah as the newest member of our news staff,” Sedalia Democrat and Star-Journal Editor Nicole Cooke said. “I think she is going to be a great addition to the team and will help the Star-Journal continue providing quality news coverage for our community readers.”

Venerable graduated in May from Missouri Valley College in Marshall where she studied Mass Communications with a focus on print writing and radio. She served as the managing editor of The Delta, MVC’s student newspaper, from January to May and served as its sports editor from August 2021 to January 2022. She was also a contributor to The Voyage, a student-produced magazine, for several years. She served as a radio show host and on-air personality on 91.7 The V from August 2019 to May 2022.

While Venerable is not a Missouri native, she is familiar with the Midwest as she is originally from Bonner Springs, Kansas.

“When looking for a job, I knew I wanted to stay in a smaller town that had a lot of community involvement. Warrensburg is just that,” Venerable said. “I am looking forward to meeting community members and enjoying all of the events around town.”

Venerable will cover Johnson County government, business, military and health for the Star-Journal, along with writing features and contributing to community event coverage for online and print publications.

Venerable can be reached at meliyahv@warrensburgstarjournal.com or 660-747-8123.
