Star-Journal adds new sports editor

Posted

The Star-Journal has added a sports editor to its newsroom staff.

Joe Andrews joined the Star-Journal staff as its new sports editor this week. Andrews will be the first full-time sports editor at the Star-Journal in almost a year, which will expand the newspaper’s sports coverage.

“Re-establishing consistent, detailed coverage of Johnson County preps and UCM from the Star-Journal is my main objective,” Andrews said. “I’m excited for the opportunity to do so beginning with the final swing of winter sports.”

Andrews graduated from Northwest Missouri State University in 2019 with a Bachelor’s in Mass Media-Sports Media. He served as the managing editor of The Missourian while at Northwest. He also worked as a sports reporter for the St. Joseph News-Press, continuing that job after his graduation. While in St. Joseph, he covered local high schools and colleges and assisted with coverage of the Kansas City Chiefs training camp. In 2020, he became a contributor for Sports Illustrated’s Arrowhead Report, writing stories related to the Chiefs.

He is familiar with Western Missouri, as he is a Missouri native from Lee’s Summit.

“I’m excited to have Joe join our Warrensburg newsroom and provide great coverage of local sports,” Editor Nicole Cooke said. “Adding a sports editor to the team means our news reporters will have more time to focus on news content while Joe can make sure our local teams are getting the coverage they deserve.”

Andrews will cover athletics at the University of Central Missouri and Johnson County high schools, writing features and game stories for online and print publications.
