Rick Brattin earns Republican bid for Mo Senate District 31

Posted

Incumbent State Senator Rick Brattin will represent the Republican Party for District 31 in the Nov. 5 General Election.

Brattin, of Harrisonville, won the overall vote of the district, which includes most of Johnson County along with Cass County and Bates County. He captured 11,028 votes, 46.9% overall.

“To all our supporters who stood with us throughout this whole campaign, thank you,” Brattin said in a statement. “I am incredibly grateful for the dedication and love that was poured into this campaign from all our supporters.”

Pleasant Hill’s Mike Haffner finished second with 6,440 votes (27.43%), while Warrensburg Dan Houx finished third with 6,013 (25.61%)

Brattin, who is running for a second term in office, moves on to a November race against Leeton’s Raymond James, who ran unopposed in Tuesday’s Democratic primary.

“It has been the honor of a lifetime to serve as your State Senator and I am proud that you have chosen me to continue to represent you in Jefferson City,” Brattin said. “I am grateful to almighty God for the many blessings he has provided me, and serving you has been amongst the greatest of those blessings.”

The result of the primary means Houx will not have a public seat for the first time since he was elected to represent Missouri House of Representatives District 54, which represents Johnson County, in 2014.

He held the position for four two-year terms before reaching term limit. Haffner had also been a state representative, previously representing Cass County and District 55 in the Missouri House of Representatives.

Warrensburg residents Brandon Phelps and Matthew Sergent also went head-to-head for the District 54 Republican seat in the Primary on Tuesday.

Phelps won that competition by a narrow 3% margin, receiving 51.89%, which breaks down to 2,392 tallies.

Sergent received 48.11% of the vote, which breaks down to 2,218 tallies.

Phelps will face off with Democrat nominee Eric Stevens, Warrensburg, who went unopposed in Tuesday’s primary, during the Nov. 5 General Election.

November’s election will also include the State Representative District 57 race, which covers portions of Johnson County, Pettis County and Henry Coutny, in the Nov. 5 General Election.

Incumbent Roger Reedy (R-Windsor) will go up against Michael Walbom (D-Knob Noster) in that race. Both went unopposed in Tuesday’s Primary.
