With Black Friday, Small Business Saturday and Cyber Monday over, it’s now time to turn attention to local nonprofits for Giving Tuesday.
According to the Giving Tuesday website, the global effort was started in 2012 “as a simple idea: a day that encourages people to do good.” It began at the 92nd Street Y and its Belfer Center for Innovation & Social Impact in New York City. Giving Tuesday is now an independent nonprofit and a global movement. While many nonprofits host Giving Tuesday campaigns, the website also encourages people to help a neighbor, make someone smile, show up for people you care about or give some of what you have to those who need help, as “every act of generosity counts, and everyone has something to give.”

Western Missouri Medical Center Foundation
The WMMC Foundation is participating in Giving Tuesday as a way to create awareness and raise funds for its most recent project, the remodel of the Emergency Room (ER). This project, called “TogethER: Transforming Emergency Care,” will increase the number of fasttrack rooms, which are areas dedicated to treating the less critically ill. It will allow WMMC to enhance the flow, patient care and privacy and reduce the length of stay for our patients in the ER. Additionally, WMMC will modify two rooms with advanced airflow features that will help contain viruses, such as COVID-19.
The WMMC Foundation has set a goal of $200,000 for this project and hopes to reach its goal by Dec. 1, on the Day of Giving. For the first time ever, the WMMC Foundation has received a matching gift, which will go into effect on the Day of Giving. This matching gift, pledged by Drs. Mark Pluym and Amira Ghazali, will match all donations received on Dec. 1 up to $5,000.

Refuge on Ming
Refuge on Ming, a part of the House on a Hill Foundation, is planning a giving Tuesday fundraiser and is looking for nightly volunteer help along with warming shelter help on frigid days. Fuller Center
The all-volunteer organization is always in need of help. Monetary donations are invested to support improving the housing of its partner families in Johnson County.
