Plenty of local opportunities for Giving Tuesday

Posted

After a weekend of holiday shopping during Black Friday and Small Business Saturday, it’s time for what’s at the heart of the season: giving.

Giving Tuesday is a national campaign to encourage donations and volunteer opportunities with nonprofit organizations. Numerous Johnson County charities are in need of assistance. To have your organization’s information added to this list, email news@warrensburgstarjournal.com.

Johnson County Board of Services

The Johnson County Board of Services Foundation is doing a Year-End-Giving campaign.

The organization needs financial support and has an online donation platform: pages.donately.com/jcbsfoundation. The goal is to raise $15,000 through the Year-End-Giving campaign.

The Foundation supports the mission of the Johnson County Board of Services: Supporting people with developmental disabilities through Advocacy, Resources, and Kindness. In 2021, they have helped cover costs for adaptive equipment, medical equipment, community activities, music lessons, equine therapy, sensory items, and more. This year they have given nearly $6,000 in assistance to individuals and families.

Refuge on Ming

Refuge on Ming is raising funds, socks, paper towels, trash bags, soap, laundry detergent, paper plates, and disposable cups for the winter season.

Visit refugeonming.org, call 660-624-1062 or email houseonahillfoundation@gmail.com.

UCM Foundation

The University of Central Missouri is seeking gifts for the Central Annual Fund. This fund provides need-based student scholarships, opportunity grants for university programs and faculty and enables UCM to respond to its most pressing opportunities.

This year, the foundation is partnering with a UCM success story: alumnus Brian Thomas Smith. Smith is a 2000 graduate, a St. Louis native, and an acclaimed Hollywood actor perhaps best known for his role on "The Big Bang Theory" and is currently featured on CBS's "United States of Al." Gifts of $25 or more to the Central Annual Fund will grant donors access to a student-produced virtual conversation with Brian on Dec. 1. A $50 gift grants access to the virtual event, plus a pair of UCM 150-Year branded socks.

Visit ucmgives.org to make a gift on Giving Tuesday, call 660-543-8000 or come by the Smiser Alumni Center at the Student Union.

Warrensburg Main Street

Warrensburg Main Street always needs donations, which help ensure a majority of its events are free of charge for the community to enjoy with a ton of activities.

The organization is specifically looking for donations to help update Christmas decor in Downtown Warrensburg. Main Street needs some updates for garland, lights, and more festive decor to help attract consumers into the downtown area during the holiday season. Main Street has used the same decor for many years and it's time for some updating. Christmas events and decor are a major economic driver for businesses, so Main Street hopes to help bring holiday cheer into Downtown Warrensburg.

Donations can be given at warrensburgmainstreet.org/donate or checks can be mailed to 125C N. Holden St., Warrensburg.

Fuller Center for Housing

The Fuller Center’s mission is to build simple, decent housing with people in need who meet the criteria (have income, willing to provide sweat equity), offering a no-interest, 20-year mortgage once the home is complete.

The organization has completed nine homes in Johnson County and has also accomplished "Greater Blessing" projects that enable Fuller Center to do home repairs for homeowners in need of assistance.

The Fuller Center’s greatest need is for volunteers and there are many ways to help. Call the Acting Director at 660-429-2763 for ideas of how to help. Monetary donations will be used within Johnson County. Checks may be mailed to:

ECHO

In the United States of America, 1 in 5 children is food insecure. In Johnson County, that means more than 5,000 kids are going to bed hungry tonight.

ECHO distributes 400-500 pounds of supplemental food every week to approximately 120 preschoolers in Johnson County for weekend consumption.

ECHO food comes from Harvesters, a regional food bank serving a 26-county area of northwestern Missouri and northeastern Kansas. A $25 donation to ECHO can help purchase a quarter pallet of food, a $50 donation can help purchase a half pallet, and a $100 donation can help purchase a whole pallet.

To donate, visit echo4kids.com and click on the “donate now” link. Donations can also be mailed to:

RISE Community Services

While RISE is in the process of revamping its volunteer program, it is in need of some donations. RISE has an Amazon Wishlist where community members can purchase items that assist the organization in carrying out its mission. Access the wish list here: https://a.co/eslqeFo.

Western Missouri Medical Center Foundation

The foundation has been counting down the days on Facebook (facebook.com/wmmcfoundation) by sharing donor and volunteer spotlights of those who impact the WMMC Foundation. The goal is to raise $10,000 on Giving Tuesday.

The foundation is also in the final stretch of fundraising for the “Innovation That Heals” campaign.

To help bring advanced care to the community, the WMMC Foundation has launched its campaign to raise $250,000 to modernize the WMMC Operating Rooms (OR). This renovation will create a modern and eco-friendly update to the OR, where more than 2,100 surgeries are performed annually.

This project will include adding energy-efficient LED lighting, purchasing state-of-the-art sterilization machines, implementing SteriTite containers and more. Overall, these upgrades will reduce waste by 80% and provide an annual savings of over $80,000.

More information can be found and donations can be made at wmmc.com/innovation.
