Optimist Club hosting essay, oratorical contest

Posted

Each year, the Optimist International Foundation promotes both an essay and oratorical contest. The Optimist Club of Warrensburg is seeking participants for its local oratorical contest on March 25.

This year’s oratorical topic theme is “Healing The World With Optimism.” The contest is designed for youth to gain experience in public speaking and provide them with the opportunity to compete for a college scholarship. Interested students should prepare a four- to five-minute speech on the assigned topic to present at the contest. The speeches are judged at the Club level, Regional level (if needed) and then at the District level. Warrensburg’s first and second place winners will go directly to Regionals to compete for a $500 award. District winners get scholarships of $2,500, $1,500 and $1,000.

Optimist International will also host an essay contest. This year’s topic is “Reaching Your Dreams by Choosing Optimism.” The essay winner can win up to $2,500 at the district level. The deadline for submissions is Feb. 19.

The contests are open to youth who are 19 and younger as of Oct. 1 of the current Optimist International contest year (Oct. 1 to Sept. 30) and not enrolled as a degree-seeking student at a post-secondary institution.
