SEDALIA — A Sedalia man has died after exchanging gunfire with Sedalia Police on Sunday evening.

According to information from the Missouri State Highway Patrol, around 6:18 p.m., the Sedalia Police Department received a call of a male armed with a gun at a residence in the 700 block of West Broadway. The suspect was also wanted for a felony parole violation and other warrants.

Officers arrived at the residence, and after a white male matching the suspect’s description fled on foot, officers established a perimeter to contain the suspect. They attempted to make contact with the suspect, later identified as 22-year-old Masen T. Moore, by giving verbal commands.

Moore fired shots at the police and an SPD officer fired his weapon and struck Moore.

Officers secured Moore and rendered aid. The Pettis County Ambulance District transported him to an area hospital. MSHP reports Moore was pronounced dead at the hospital.

The information from MSHP states no officers were injured and no other citizens were involved.

West Broadway Boulevard between South Quincy Avenue and South Grand Avenue remained closed late into the night as law enforcement officers from the SPD, Pettis County Sheriff’s Office and MSHP were present.

Information from MSHP stated there is no active threat to the community.

The MSHP Division of Drug and Crime Control is investigating the shooting at the request of SPD.

Resident Jose Alicea said he walked outside his house to have a cigarette when he heard gunshots.

“The cops were coming out of everywhere and the guy was running through them houses over there (the north side of Broadway),” Alicea told the Democrat on Sunday evening shortly after the shooting. “Got to this house (south side of Broadway) and I guess he couldn’t go over the fence.”

Alicea added that is supposedly when the man pulled a gun and pointed it at officers.

Alicea and many nearby residents were standing outside their homes while local law enforcement blocked the area.
