WARRENSBURG — The Warrensburg Police Department is investigating a homicide involving a 22-year-old Kansas City resident who was shot and killed early Sunday morning, Jan. 17, in Warrensburg.

According to a news release, Warrensburg officers responded at 12:22 a.m. Jan. 17 to Western Missouri Medical Center to investigate a shooting.

Upon arriving at the hospital, officers discovered Marcus A. Brown Jr. suffering from a gunshot wound. Brown was pronounced dead shortly after officers arrived.

The WPD news release states officers interviewed two men who were with Brown who said they were at a party with Brown at Bodies Bar, 126 W. Pine St., Warrensburg. They were attending the “One Ratchet Battle of The Midwest Party.”

The men said when they left the party they were followed by several males to the parking lot on the northwest corner of Washington and Pine streets where a fight started involving Brown and the males.

At some point during the fight, Brown was shot by one of the males. After he was shot, the men with Brown transported him to the hospital, where Brown died.

The males involved in the fight and shooting fled the area on foot.

WPD Chief Rich Lockhart said the agency has not confirmed any suspects as of Wednesday, Jan. 20.

WPD has requested assistance from the Rural Major Case Squad, which includes investigators from Johnson, Lafayette, Pettis, Henry, Saline, Carroll and Ray counties in addition to the Missouri State Highway Patrol. The RMCS will be activated for up to three days while investigators follow-up on leads.

Lockhart said partnering with these agencies allowed the departments to follow up on almost 30 leads in a single day while doing so alone would have taken WPD several weeks.

In addition to the RMCS, the Kansas City, Missouri, Police Department is also assisting. Lockhart said WPD is working closely with KCPD as all of the individuals known to be involved at this time all have connections to Kansas City.

“So far, there is no Warrensburg connection to any of the people involved in the shooting,” Lockhart said.

Lockhart said the party drew about 200 people, with many coming from the Kansas City area.

“This was an avoidable situation created by an irresponsible business owner who invited this type of party to our community,” Lockhart said. “All of the information we’ve been able to establish is there was a very large contingent of hardcore criminally known individuals from Kansas City.

“This is something as a community we’re going to have to take a very close look at,” Lockhart added. “Is this the kind of criminal element that we want to invite to our community by throwing parties like this?”

WPD is asking anyone with information about the party or the homicide to call the department at 660-747-9133.
