Johnson County Clerk’s Office preparing for general election

Posted

JOHNSON COUNTY — The general election is approaching, so Johnson County Clerk Diane Thompson and her polling crew are working hard to make sure Election Day and absentee voting go smoothly.

This election was the first time that no-excuse absentee voting was available two weeks prior to Election Day. Thompson said this week has been busy with absentee voters.

“We have been extremely busy this past week,” Thompson said late Thursday. “Monday through today, we have voted almost 500 voters in four days.”

On Oct. 16, incorrect absentee ballots were sent out; that problem has since been resolved. Thompson and the clerks in voter registration were able to correct the issue and reissue the correct ballots to all registered voters.

There is also a new requirement for voting in Missouri: all registered voters must present a photo ID. Thompson said she thinks this won't cause any problems because she believes that most residents will have some form of ID.

“I think things will go smoothly,” Thompson said. “Being in a rural area where public transportation isn’t readily available, most of our residents that are voting age have at least a driver's license or non-driver ID. I think most voters will have one of the photo IDs that is now required.”

As far as voter turn out, Thompson is expecting about 60% of the registered voters.

“I hope we will see a steady turnout throughout the day and am looking forward to about a 60% turnout,” Thompson said. “It will be lower than November 2020 because it’s a midterm election, but I would imagine the turnout will be in keeping with past midterm elections at 60%.

“I encourage all voters to give this election their time and attention. Be sure to thank your poll workers for their time and dedication.”

Polling places are open from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 8.

Absentee ballots can be received at the Voter Registration office until 7 p.m. on Election Day.

Sample ballots are available in the Voter Registration office, by mail, by email or by visiting the county website. There are several constitutional amendments on the ballot that voters will want time to review prior to marking their ballot. Information on ballot measures can be found at www.sos.mo.gov on the 2022 Ballot Measures link under the Initiative and Referendum Petitions tab.

The following contested candidates and issues will be on Johnson County ballots, although ballots will vary depending on where a voter lives. Voters will also consider if several state-level judges should be retained in office.
