Filing begins for primary election

Posted

Candidate filing began Tuesday for the Aug. 2 primary election in Missouri.

County candidates can file at the Johnson County Clerk’s Office while state and federal candidates file with the Missouri Secretary of State’s Office. Filing ends March 29.

Candidates must list a political party. Those who win their party’s race in August will go on to the General Election on Nov. 8.

U.S. Senate

Sen. Roy Blunt, R-Mo., announced last year that he would not be seeking another term after serving since 2010. That announcement led to a long list of candidates making their own announcements to seek Blunt’s vacant seat in 2022.

Republicans who filed Tuesday include Patrick A. Lewis, Eric Schmitt, Billy Long, Eric Greitens,

Bernie Mowinski, C.W. Gardner, Deshon Porter, Vicky Hartzler, Dave Sims, Mark McCloskey, Eric McElroy, Dennis Lee Chilton, Robert Allen, Dave Schatz and Hartford Tunnell.

Democrats who filed Tuesday include Lewis Rolen, Scott Sifton, Gena Ross, Carla Coffee Wright, Josh Shipp, Spencer Toder, Lucas Kunce and Jewel Kelly.

Missouri Auditor

Auditor Nicole Galloway, a Democrat, announced last year she was not seeking re-election after serving in her position since 2015 and a failed gubernatorial campaign against Gov. Mike Parson in 2020.

Republicans who filed Tuesday include David Gregory and Scott Fitzpatrick.

One Democrat, Alan Green, filed on Tuesday.

U.S. House District 4

The state Senate is still debating the new congressional map for 2022, so the eight U.S. House districts could change. Currently, Pettis County is part of District 4.

U.S. Rep. Vicky Hartzler, R-Harrisonville, is running for Blunt’s Senate seat, leaving her House seat open for a new candidate.

Republicans were the only candidates to file Tuesday: Jim Campbell, Rick Brattin, William (Bill) Irwin, Mark Alford, Kalena Bruce, Taylor Burks and Sara Walsh.

State House District 52

After the House Independent Bipartisan Citizens Commission unanimously approved a new House map in January, the northern portion of Pettis County remains represented by District 52. However, the county is no longer represented by Districts 48, 51 and 54.

State Rep. Brad Pollitt, R-Sedalia, was first elected to the state House in 2018 and is up for reelection in 2022.

Pollitt was the only candidate to file Tuesday.

State House District 54

After the House Independent Bipartisan Citizens Commission unanimously approved a new House map in January, the northern portion of Johnson County remains represented by District 54. However, the county is no longer represented by Districts 51, 52 and 53.

State Rep. Dan Houx, R-Warrensburg, is up for reelection in 2022. If he wins, this will be his last two-year term in the House due to term limits.

Houx was the only candidate to file Tuesday.

State House District 57

The southern portions of Pettis and Johnson counties will now be represented by District 57 based on the House Independent Bipartisan Citizens Commission’s new House map. The position is currently held by state Rep. Rodger Reedy, R-Windsor. Currently, District 57 covers portions of Benton, Cass, and Bates counties, but it will now cover portions of Johnson, Pettis and Benton counties.

Reedy filed for re-election on Tuesday along with fellow candidate James Mahlon White, of Warsaw. Libertarian William Truman (Bill) Wayne, of Warrensburg, also filed.
