Posted

American Legion Post 131 and VFW Post 2513 will host Memorial Day events starting on Friday, May 26 and running through Tuesday, May 30.

Starting at 8:30 a.m. Friday, May 26, members of both posts will coordinate the flag placement at the graves of the veterans buried in the Sunset Hill Cemetery in Warrensburg. Service members and family from Whiteman Air Force Base and cadets from the AFJROTC TRIAD 20052 will assist with the flag placement.

On Monday, May 29, short ceremonies will be hosted at two cemeteries around Warrensburg. At 9:10 a.m., a ceremony at Memorial Gardens Cemetery will start, followed by a ceremony at Sunset Hill at 9:25 a.m. The main ceremony for the day will be at 10 a.m. at the Johnson County Courthouse. In the event of inclement weather, the cemetery ceremonies may be canceled and the 10 a.m. ceremony would be moved to Legion Post 131, 733 E. Young St. in Warrensburg.

The guest speaker for the 10 a.m. ceremony will be 2nd Lt. Lindsey Weichel, Chief of Public Affairs for the 509th Bomb Wing at Whiteman AFB. She leads a 12-member team that contextualizes military actions, operations, and capabilities while countering competitors’ and adversaries’ misinformation, disinformation, and propaganda efforts.

She earned her commission through the Reserve Officer Training Corps at Michigan State University in May 2022. She attended the Public Affairs and Communication Strategy Qualification Course and graduated in December 2022.

She is married to 2nd Lt. Andrew Weichel, who is assigned to the 509th Security Forces Squadron at Whiteman AFB.

Volunteers will pick up the Sunset Hill Cemetery flags starting at 5 p.m. Tuesday, May 30.
