Armed person reported at Western Missouri Medical Center

WARRENSBURG — A man is in custody and no one is injured after a threat was made against Western Missouri Medical Center on Friday morning.

ORIGINAL STORY

Multiple Johnson County agencies are responding to an armed person situation at Western Missouri Medical Center. 

No injuries are reported at this time. 

The Missouri State Highway Patrol reported on Twitter at 9:03 a.m. that troopers had responded to WMMC for reports of a male armed with a firearm. The tweet states that no shots had been fired and that the male had yet to be identified or located by law enforcement. 

At 9:08 a.m., WMMC posted on Facebook that an active shooter was at the WMMC main hospital building and that it was not a drill. At 9:20 a.m., the post was updated to state police were on site. At 9:44 a.m., the post was updated to state staff and patients were being evacuated.

The Warrensburg Police Department posted on Facebook at 9:24 a.m. that “there is currently a situation at Western Missouri Medical Center, police are on scene. Please avoid the area.” At 9:40 a.m., the post was updated to state ​​evacuation was in progress.  

Due to its proximity to the hospital, Warrensburg Parks and Recreation reported that the Warrensburg Community Center is under lockdown and Nassif Aquatic Center will be closed until the situation is resolved.

Numerous law enforcement and first responder agencies are parked at both WMMC and at The Park at Grover Park Baptist Church, which is across the street from WMMC, as the situation unfolds. WMMC staff members, some seen wearing scrubs and personal protective equipment, are coming out of the hospital in waves and are being directed to The Park.

The Johnson County Sheriff’s Office, WPD, MSHP, Johnson County Ambulance District and Johnson County Emergency Management Agency are all on scene. Several agencies from around the area have also responded to the scene.
