Posted

Johnson County is under numerous weather alerts for the week, according to the National Weather Service in Pleasant Hill.

A Cold Weather Advisory goes into effect at 9 p.m. Monday, Feb. 17, and remains in place until 6 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 19.

Along with the cold, the region will once again battle snow. A Winter Storm Warning is in effect from midnight Tuesday, Feb. 18 until 3 a.m. Wednesday.

Approximately 5 to 10 inches of snow are expected during the timeframe. Higher accumulations are forecasted for areas to the south of Interstate 70.

The NWS issues a Cold Weather Advisory when seasonably cold air temperatures or wind values, but not extremely cold values, are expected or occurring. In the case of Monday night through Wednesday, dangerously cold wind hills as low as -20 to -25 Fahrenheit are expected.

Following the advisory, an Extreme Cold Watch will be in effect from 6 p.m. Wednesday until noon Thursday, Feb. 20. The watch is a step above an advisory, and states residents should avoid being outside during the coldest parts of the day.

Highs near 10 degrees Fahrenheit are forecasted each day, though wind near 10 mph, with gusts as high as 20 mph, could also take place.

A warmup is forecasted for the end of the week, with highs reaching the 20s on Friday, Feb. 21, the 30s on Saturday, Feb. 22 and the 40s on Sunday, Feb. 23.
